To add to the intrigue, Canberra was actually established as a compromise between Sydney and Melbourne, who both wanted to be the capital so badly that neither city ended up with the title. Instead, the federal government built Canberra between the two cities as a way of keeping everyone happy. Did it work? Well, that&rsquo;s yet to be seen.
